July and August on the French Riviera are magical – but so is the traffic. Millions of visitors arrive, and the roads weren't designed for them. Here's how to keep your vacation stress-free.
The Reality: What to Expect
The A8 Motorway (Nice-Cannes-Monaco) becomes a parking lot from 10 AM to 7 PM in July-August. A normally 30-minute Nice to Cannes drive can take 90 minutes.
Coastal Roads are even worse: the N98 to Saint-Tropez is legendarily awful (4-hour waits not unheard of), and Monaco is accessible only with local knowledge.
Parking? Good luck. Beach parking can cost €30-50/day – if you find a space at all.
The Golden Hours: When to Travel
🌅 Early Morning (Before 9 AM)
The roads are quiet, parking spaces exist, and beaches are empty. Arrive at your destination by 9:30 AM and you'll feel like you have the Riviera to yourself.
🌙 Evening (After 7 PM)
Beach traffic has cleared, day-trippers have gone home. Perfect time for a scenic drive, dinner reservation, or late sunset transfer.
⛱️ Midday (Avoid!)
11 AM – 4 PM is the absolute worst. Everyone is going to or from the beach. If you must travel now, have a professional driver who knows alternatives.
